This is an observation to investigate, not an established explanation of the performance gap.

The questions

What does changing pace mean: faster decisions, ball circulation, player movement, transitions, or a combination?

When pressure or tempo changes, which aspects of control deteriorate first?

How much of the difference reflects adaptable skills rather than player quality, fitness, recruitment, resources, or match context?

Which training approaches improve adaptation, and does that improvement transfer to competitive matches?

Our first milestone

A foundational evidence review and research framework will map what soccer analytics and coaching research already know, identify gaps, and define a manageable first study. The review is planned; no findings have yet been published.

How we will investigate

Review the evidence. Document sources, methods, strengths, and limitations.

Define the measures. Separate pace, pressure, control, and adaptation; specify the age group and competitive setting.

Study comparable situations. Use appropriately available match footage and event or tracking data, accounting for opponent strength, score, match phase, fatigue, and personnel.

Test candidate explanations. Look for evidence that challenges the hypothesis as well as supports it.

Develop and evaluate training models. Establish baselines, compare outcomes, and test transfer to unfamiliar opponents and match situations.

Research standards

We will distinguish observations, hypotheses, correlations, and evidence of causal effects. Each study will explain its population, data, methods, limitations, and unanswered questions. Improvement through training must be distinguished from improvement through recruitment.

“A,” “B,” and “C” describe relative performance within a defined setting; they are not official rankings. Youth development, professional promotion and relegation, and international competition require separate comparisons. U.S. men’s soccer is one motivating context, not a predetermined conclusion about national progress.

Sources and further reading

Our Research Resources page collects starting points in coaching, football analysis, and open data.
